Lake District:
The Dunnerdale Fells

29 December 2005 - Great Stickle and Tarn Hill

Ascending from the Duddon Valley near Stonestar farm on to the Dunnerdale Fells , a look west to Whit Fell.

The frosty track rises towards Great Stickle, with two cairns visible left (unnamed summit), and Great Stickle, right.

A cairn at a path junction. The noble peak centre is Stickle Pike.

Turning the other way we reach the top of Great Stickle, with this view south to the Duddon estuary

North the view to Tarn Hill left and Stickle Pike right.

The trig point on Great Stickle, looking across Dunnerdale Beck to Raven's Crag and behind it Caw and its ridge ascending to the more well known Coniston fells.

31 December 2005 - Raven's Crag and The Knott

Today we visited the east side of the Dunnerdale valley, from near Kiln Bank Cross onto the ridge above Stainton Ground Quarries. I slightly misjudged the weather window, and it was wet and very windy initially. Here a view south to the Duddon estuary from the highest point of the ridge, unnamed on Ordnance Survey maps but which could take the name
"Stainton Ground Top". We look past the top of Raven's Crag to the summit of The Knott.

Skirting Raven's Crag, we look forward to The Knott.

George and the summit cairn on The Knott, with the Duddon estuary beyond, as the weather dries and brightens.

A delightful descent took us down a winding path to Stainton Ground farm. A few vestiges of Thursday's night's snow remain.
